COVID-19: I would have gone for my kids says – Oye Lithur
Former Gender Minister Nana Oye Lithur from the National Democratic Congress spoke on a popular show on Starr Fm with ace Broadcaster Bola Ray last night on issues pertaining to the current Covid-19 facing the nation.
With a focus on the education sector where parents have been agitating for their kids to be returned back to their families, The former Gender Minister indicated categorically that if she had her children in any of the schools at this point she would not have hesitated to go for her kids as she wouldn’t be comfortable knowing that her children are not safe.

She also stressed that the statement from the education minister that they would not allow them to come home until a certain percentage of cases be detected was very insensitive and that the whole arrangements need to be looked at again.
The minority in parliament seems to be singing the same song the former gender minister is talking about thereby pilling pressure on the government to close all schools again. Come to think of it students across the country are definitely going to be traumatized by the whole COVID-19 impact and there’s no way this would prepare them for their final exams which have been slated for July 4th.
There are a lot of questions that are being asked such as what would happen to students who get infected during the period of the exams where they have to be isolated, would they be allowed to write theirs after they have recovered from the virus, more questions than answers and it’s high time the government heeds to the call of closing down all schools immediately.
The former gender minister also spoke extensively on her weight loss journey and the fulfillment she’s getting ever since she decided to embark on this new health journey.
Covid-19 has had its impact on students while at home but since the student reported to the school for final preparation toward the 2020 WASCE, schools have reported COVID-19 cases.
Accra Girls has reported at least 56 cases, Mawuko Girls in the Volta Region has also been in the news however, the Education ministry and the GES have defended their decision to keep students in school.
The 2020 WASSCE is expected to start on July 20 and the decision to ensure students take the exams has been cast in stone.
Parents, civil society organizations, the National PTA, and GNAT have all called on the Ghana Education Service to permit students to go home but the GES will have none of that.
Parents are only praying that their children should come home safely however, would the students who were in boarding houses be quarantined at home after the exams? Let us think about it.
