Arewa group stop Tinubu from becoming Nigeria’s next president

– The Arewa Youths for Peace and Security (AYPS) has backed the reported presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu

– The group faults the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, for his comments about the APC leader

– The AYPS said Ngige’s reference to Tinubu as his mate before a House of Representatives committee was improper 

The reported presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu seems to have gotten the support of a northern-based group known as the Arewa Youths for Peace and Security (AYPS). The group, in a statement on Thursday, July 23, said no one can stop Tinubu’s presidential ambition if it is destined by God, The Tribune reports.

The AYPS made the statement when reacting to remarks by the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, about the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader.

The Arewa group accused Ngige of making uncomplimentary remarks about Tinubu before a House of Representatives adhoc committee.

It said the minister’s reference to Tinubu as his mate while exchanging words with a member of the committee, James Faleke, was in bad taste The group alleged that Ngige’s comments showed that some people in the present administration were opposed to Tinubu becoming the next president of Nigeria and are ready to stop him.

AYPS asked Ngige to apologise to Tinubu over his comments and advised those it perceived as working against the purported aspiration of the APC leader to refrain from speaking bad about him.

Meanwhile, the race for the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has heightened as some prominent Nigerians have said the south should produce the next Nigerian leader.

According to Vanguard, Nigerians who have drummed support for this call include a chieftain of the APC in Kano state, Brig-General Idris Dambazzau; elder statesmen, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai; Chief Edwin Clark, and Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo

Others speaking in a similar manner are Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed; former deputy national chairman of the PDP Chief Bode George; Chief Ebenezer Babatope; Chief Supo Shonibare, and Senator Femi Okorounmu and the national chairman of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, retd.

It was reported that most south-south leaders agreed that the 2023 presidency should be narrowed to the southeast which, according to them, has never had a taste of the office.

Yakassai, while noting that though zoning of presidential candidates to any region was at the discretion of political parties, he added the south should be given the opportunity to produce the next president.
