No Ghanaian will score EC’s performance even 30% – Nii Lante Vanderpuye
The Odododiodoo Member of Parliament, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has criticized the Electoral Commission’s (EC) conduct during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
The criticism from Nii Lante Vanderpuye is a result of the ongoing network issues that plague the registration procedure.
The former Sports Minister fiercely contended that most Ghanaians would find it difficult to even give the EC’s performance a 30% rating based on its obligations during an interview on the Big Issues with Selorm Adonoo.
“Operating on the law, every Ghanaian, almost all of us will not mark this even EC 30% on their delivery. Using the law, LI and all the regulations in the law that guide their activities,” Nii Lante stated.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye illuminated his position by citing examples in which he claimed the election commission tried to skirt the rules in order to get its way.
“For example, in this registration exercise, which is our focus, right from day 1, the EC tried to entrench the issue of the usage of the national ID alone as against the vehemence of the minority in parliament. They couldn’t because they were not able to get their Constitutional Instrument (CI) through,” Nii Lante stated.
“But for that, that was what they wanted to do. Against the rationalisation of all Ghanaians that this is not possible and that cannot work,” Nii Lante explained.
The Electoral Commission begun the limited voter registration exercise for first-time voters and persons who wish to own a voter card on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
The 21-day exercise will end on May 27, 2024.
Chairperson of the EC, Madam Jean Mensa, says the exercise aims at registering approximately 623,000 first-time voters across the country.
“The registration will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And that gives us the figure of 623,000 that we have put there. That is not to say that we cannot go beyond that. We did mention that in 2023, we projected 700,000 people to visit our registration centres.”
