Mr Fifi Kwetey appeals to electorates to vote for change
Mr Fifi Kwetey, the General-Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), says the voters must vote for change following eight years of New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, which he describes as “marked by economic hardship, corruption, and poor governance.”

Mr Fifi Kwetey, speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic, likened the NPP’s leadership to a reckless driver jeopardizing passengers’ lives. He mentioned the country’s current economic situation, which necessitates an urgent IMF intervention, the high cost of living, and “the lack of accountability and humility to admit to the difficulties” as causes for reform.
“The verdict lies with the people of Ghana. They make that decision as to who wins any election. We believe, however, that if we gauge the sentiments of the people of Ghana properly, they have seen virtually the eight years of what they (NPP) are doing; it is clear to Ghanaians that there is a need for change,” Mr Fifi Kwetey said.
Hard work
The General-Secretary stated that, despite the fact that the NPP was expected to lose the 2024 general election due to the country’s economic difficulties, the party would not take any chances and would strive hard for ultimate triumph.
“So we have a responsibility not just to wait for the sentiments of the people to be the reason why we will win. We have to make sure we defend the votes of the people because we believe they will vote against the NPP,” he said.
Mr Fifi Kwetey added that “the 2024 election will not be so much about the ‘NDC versus the NPP’, but is going to actually be the people of Ghana versus NPP to let the NPP know that we are not happy about what is happening”.
He also pointed to the NPP’s continual blaming of others, corruption, and waste of resources, such as the construction of a cathedral, as examples of weak leadership. Mr. Kwetey stated that the upcoming election will be a referendum on the NPP’s performance, with Ghanaians voting for change. While conceding that the NDC still has work to do, Mr Fifi Kwetey emphasized the significance of defending the people’s votes and stopping the NPP from taking them. He expressed optimism that Ghanaians will vote for change, rejecting the NPP’s attempts to maintain power.
Fairness
Mr Fifi Kwetey urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure impartiality in the election process. Mr Kwetey commented on the recently concluded voter transfer exercise, stating that the EC’s initial decision to prevent political party agents from monitoring the procedure was problematic.
However, the EC gradually permitted political parties to participate, resulting in a more collaborative approach.
He underlined the significance of fairness and openness in the election process, noting that the NDC was eager to work with the EC through the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to establish correct guidelines.
Mr Fifi Kwetey emphasized the NDC’s concern for preventing any interference or shenanigans in the electoral process, hence maintaining a level playing field for all parties.
