NCCE exucates St. Catherine SHS Students on Limited Voter Registration exercise
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the South Tongu District, led by Mr. Fiagorme, has taken to a task of educating St. Catherine Senior High School pupils on the nation’s current limited voter registration exercise.
The occasion was held in the Agbakope school auditorium, and Mr. Fiagorme took the chance to encourage pupils to register for voter ID cards during the four-day break provided by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Speaking to the students, Mr. Fiagorme underlined the need of civic engagement and said that eligible citizens will have plenty of time to register during the 21-day limited voter registration period, which began on May 7, 2024.
He said that students who are eighteen years of age and older will be able to exercise their democratic right to vote during the four-day break.
In his explanation of the registration procedure’s logistics, Mr. Fiagorme mentioned that registration centers would be established in two isolated communities inside the South Tongu District in addition to the district office.
In order to ensure a seamless registration process, he suggested students to arrive prepared with two guarantors or a Ghana card.
Additionally, the NCCE Director gave the students copies of the 1992 constitution and encouraged them to routinely study its provisions in order to actively defend the democratic values included in it, as well as to understand their rights and obligations as citizens.
A few students informed as reported by Ghana News Agency that they will follow all rules to register as voters in the next general elections with the Electoral Commission.
Meanwhile, the Commission is seeking to register about 623,000 first-time voters onto the electoral roll in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise across the country ahead of the December 7 national elections.
“The registration will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And that gives us the figure of 623,000 that we have put there. That is not to say that we cannot go beyond that. We did mention that in 2023, we projected 700,000 people to visit our registration centres,” EC revealed.
