EC rectifies inaccuracies in voter registration figures
In the course of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, the Electoral Commission (EC) has taken action to correct errors in the daily voter registration figures published.
The EC declared that 143,014 eligible voters had registered overall in a press release released at the end of the registration period on day four.
“The Electoral Commission has noted some mistakes in the daily voter registration figures earlier published. The mistakes appeared in the total registered figures stated for days two and three although the individual regional figures were accurate, while the day three figure for Upper East was repeated for day four. All these have been corrected,” the EC stated.
However, the EC released a follow-up statement conceding inaccuracies less than 24 hours after releasing the day-four statistics. It said specifically that the number from day three had been duplicated for day four in the Upper East region. These differences were quickly fixed.
The EC made it clear that although the errors had an impact on the overall registered data for days two and three, the specific regional figures were still correct. As a result, there were 143,014 registered voters overall, which did not change.
“At the end of the four days, the total number of registered voters remains 143,014,” the EC emphasized.
The EC provided a breakdown of voter registration numbers by region, stating that the Greater Accra region had 17,837 registered voters, while the Ashanti region had the highest number at 25,558. While attempts are still being made to reach the registration target before the exercise ends, other regions have reported differing numbers.
First-time voters and those wishing to receive a voter card are the target for the voter registration exercise, which started on May 7. The exercise is slated to run for 21 days, ending on May 27, 2024.
By the end of the exercise, it is projected that 623,000 new voters would have been added to the voter rolls.
As the country gets ready for next elections, the EC is still dedicated to making sure voter registration procedures are correct and transparent.
