2024 Elections: Bawumia’s running mate will be announced in June – Sammi Awuku
Director-General of the Ghana Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku, has revealed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will reveal his running mate in June.
The Vice President, he claimed, has concluded his different conversations over his running mate and will make the announcement the next month.
In an interview on Yen Nsempa on Accra’s Onua FM, Awuku stressed that Dr. Bawumia is still within a suitable window of time to make the news. He used the choice of Dr. Bawumia as his running mate made by then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in August 2008 for that year’s election as an example.
“We are very much within the timeline. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago, so we still have time. If you recall, his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So, for us in the NPP, we are very much within our timelines,” Awuku stated.
“It can be tomorrow, it can be next week, it can be next month, it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running mate is going to be, and when he is ready, he is going to announce that.”
Awuku further pointed out that John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the NDC, will be Dr. Bawumia’s main opponent in the next elections, not his running mate.
“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is in a contest with John Mahama. They are the two people who are going to be on the ballot paper, and these are people we have seen before. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s competition, his contest is the former president,” he added.
Sammi Awuku’s remarks come in the midst of rumors regarding the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) and political experts’ reasons for delaying the announcement of a running mate.
