NDC applauds EC’s decision to replace voter IDs of Akosombo dam spillage victims
The Electoral Commission (EC) has received praise from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for acting promptly in fulfilling their request to register the names of those affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
During a press conference on May 16, Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the party, urged the commission to give victims of the recent Akosombo Dam spillage free replacement voter ID cards.
Mr. Kwetey emphasized the seriousness of the situation and urged the EC to act swiftly and sympathetically to lessen the burden on the affected individuals.
The EC then confirmed that there will be no fees for voters who were affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage to replace their voter ID cards.
Regarding this, Mustapha Gbande, the deputy general secretary, said that the party is happy with how the EC has responded to their demands.
“One would have expected that such a decision would have been made long ago; it should not take the NDC to be the one calling on the Electoral Commission to do that,” he added.
Additionally, Mr. Gbande praised the police for their dedication to maintaining security throughout the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
“I think that so far most of the officers of the Electoral Commission have been very cooperative and very professional on the ground.
“With the way the police have conducted themselves, even though it is not the best, they have done so well. The IGP and the Commissioner need to be commended for that,” he added.
Meanwhile, Haruna Mohammed, the deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party, claims that the EC would have registered Akosombo Dam spillage victims in accordance with their constitutional obligation and not because of the NDC’s request.
“So if the EC is designing a project to ensure that those from the flood affected areas are registered then constitutionally they are delivering on their own mandate; whether you made a public statement or you don’t make a public statement,” he said.
