Ghana’s EC is simply incorrigible in attempting to deny millions of Ghanaians citizenship

Voter ID card of Ghana has remained the most trusted means of identity but Ghana’s EC is simply incorrigible at this time.

Which law in Ghana says that if two persons attest that a person is a Ghanaian then they automatically become Ghanaians. Yet, they will accept a “guarantee form” and reject identity cards issued by recognized state bodies for identification.

Know what is worse? The two guarantors who can attest to citizenship must already be “registered voters” at the time of registration. Meaning people who used the impugned voter ID card to register can attest to the citizenship of 10 others but they themselves cannot register.

Those insisting that guarantors must first re-register have clearly not read CI 126 nor understand the illogicality of that position. On day 1, prospective registrants who have neither a passport nor NIA card must arrive at the registration with their form ALREADY attested!

You all know a correct National ID is a way! But we keep going round in circles every 4yrs over who a Ghanaian is! As we speak, the newly born are not given any identity. They will grow to add to the confusion. Have a proper ID system that tracks you from birth, and stop this mess.

How many registered voters on the voters’ register are not Ghanaians? The voter ID card currently in use has been the most trusted means of identification in Ghana. If the EC does not have an answer to this? Then they are struggling with a lost battle.

Some have argued that the EC has provided a grounded explanation for this decision but others just don’t want to yield to them. According to these persons, the old voters’ ID becomes questionable when the EC vrs Ramadan & Nimako court ruling expelled NHIS card from being used to prove one’s nationality.

Some have also questions as to which law in Ghana states that having an NHIS card makes you a Ghanaian. That means I can guarantee for as many Ivorians, Togolese, Burkinabes, or Malians to have the new voter register because I own a passport, and once I register I am at liberty to serve as a guarantor for any foreigner… Let’s call a spade a spade.  The EC is not serious. Let us put away political bias, be careful we do not deny people their rights as citizens through this ill attempt to new voter ID card to every Ghanaian. What is wrong with starting this process a year after the 2020 general elections? 

EC will have a Herculean task to meet the bar set by the Supreme court of Ghana.
