Russia-Ukraine conflict: Ghana expresses appreciation to Romania
Thomas Mbomba, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration met with Ambassador Cornel Feruta, State Secretary for Global Affairs and Diplomatic Strategies at Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Bucharest.
The Romanian State Secretary welcomed the Deputy Minister and expressed his country’s gratitude to Ghana for its support and views on a UN resolution on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
He went on to say that it was in keeping with Ghana’s long-standing support for international humanitarian law and human rights.
Mr. Mbomba responded by agreeing with the State Secretary’s assertion and taking the opportunity to express Ghana’s heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of the Republic of Romania for the warm reception and hospitality extended to him and his delegation since their arrival in Bucharest on March 5, 2022.
He also praised Romania’s government and people for opening their borders to all Ghanaian students fleeing the violence in Ukraine, stressing that such a gesture demonstrated Romania’s commitment to the solid bilateral relations that exist between our two nations. In a meeting on the sidelines of the 6th EU-AU summit in Brussels between the President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his Romanian counterpart, Hon. Mbomba stated that Ghana was committed to further enhancing bilateral ties and cooperation between the two countries.
The State Secretary of Romania, for his part, noted that Romanians were typically warm and accommodating to foreigners, especially during such a time of need, and that his administration stood in solidarity with all individuals impacted by the awful conflict. He said that around 295,000 individuals have left the Ukraine conflict, with approximately 80,000 of them finding their way to Romania.

Continuing, the State Secretary stated that the Romanian government has taken efforts to alter the country’s regulations in order to allow some of the stranded Ukrainian students to complete their studies in Romanian institutions, with priority given to those in their final year. He went on to say that such a gesture was designed to improve people-to-people contact amongst the impacted countries.
He then took use of the occasion to congratulate Ghana on its 65th anniversary of independence and gave to his Ghana counterpart an official letter of congratulations from H. E. Mr. Bogdan Aurescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Romania.

In his closing remarks, Hon Mbomba thanked the government and people of Romania once more for offering Ghanaian students fleeing the conflict in Ukraine the opportunity to complete their education in that country and vowed to initiate communication through diplomatic channels to take advantage of the offer.
