COVID-19 freebies: Government ‘Teasing’ Ghanaians ahead of elections
Barely four months to elections, Ghanaians the chance to enjoy more COVID-19 freebies from the government. Is this an attempt to win electorates to vote for the government or a mere act of true leadership aimed at ensuring the Ghanaian truly do not fell the impact of COVID-19?
Did we need COVID-19 to compel the government to take action? The COVID-19 is a blessing in disguise for the Ghanaian people and businesses.

In the mid-year budget read, the Finance Minister lamented that revenue was dropping whiles the inverse was the case for expenditure. However, the government believe it is prudent to give freebies in the form of free Water and Electricity for Ghanaians.
Free and the NPP government have become synonymous to “Borla ni Petey” It is prudent that the government improves on incomes and wages which will enable us to afford such services instead of always giving them out for free.
(i) An unprecedented GH¢100 billion Ghana Cares Obaatanpa Programme to transform and modernise our society
(ii) (ii) For the next 6 months:-
- Reduce CST from 9% to 5%
- Establish a GH¢2 billion Guarantee Facility to support all sectors of business and job retention
- Establish an Unemployment Insurance Scheme
- Create a GH¢100 Fund for Labour and Faith-based organisations for retraining and skills development
- Increase the CapBuss Programme by GH¢150 million to, among others, facilitate credit of GH¢50 million to support the Creative Arts, the Media and the Conference of Independent Universities.
- Retain provision of free water for the next three months g. Retain free electricity for all life-line customers for the rest of the year.
The government intends to roll out the above policies over the next 3 ½ years. Are the COVID-19 freebies coming at the right time to give the government in power some political capital?
