EC Warns Minors to Avoid the Mop-Up Voter Registration Exercise
The Electoral Commission (EC) warns minors under 18 to refrain from participating in the Mop-Up Voter Registration exercise.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a warning to anyone under 18 years old to refrain from participating in the upcoming Mop-Up Voter Registration Exercise. This registration event is set to occur from Thursday, August 1, to Saturday, August 3, 2024.
The commission aims to enrol between 50,000 and 70,000 new voters in this initiative. Registration Exercise, which is set to take place from August 1 to August 3, 2024. Mr. Samuel Tettey, a Deputy Chairman of the EC, emphasized the importance of parents and guardians preventing underage individuals from taking part in the exercise. Additionally, he announced that the Voters Register exhibition will be held from August 20 to 27, 2024, at all polling stations nationwide, urging registered voters to verify their information. He also stressed the need for applicants and registration officials to maintain proper conduct during the exercise.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled a supplementary registration process for qualified voters in preparation for the 2024 general election. During a press conference held on Monday, July 29, Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman responsible for Operations, revealed that the online registration will take place from Wednesday, August 1 to Saturday, August 3.
“To ensure a comprehensive voter’s roll for the upcoming 2024 general elections, the Electoral Commission will be conducting a mop-up voter registration exercise. This initiative aims to provide an opportunity for eligible individuals who missed the initial registration period and those who have reached voting age since then to register as voters, allowing them to participate in the December elections,” he explained.

During the press conference, the Electoral Commission (EC) listed some points to be mandated during the Mop-Up process. The exercise will take place at all of the EC’s 26 District offices, 26 public universities, and 41 prison centres across the country. It will run daily from 7 am to 6 pm, he added.
- The Electoral Commission will conduct a Mop-Up Voter Registration Exercise from August 1-3, 2024.
- Those eligible to register are those who turned 18 years after the Limited Voter Registration Exercise ended on 29th May 2024 and eligible persons who could not register during the Limited Registration Exercise.
- The exercise will occur at the 268 district offices of the Commission, 26 public universities, and 41 prison centres across the country.
- The exercise will start at 7 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. each day.
- The Commission projects to register between 50,000 and 70,000 voters.
- An applicant is required to present either a Ghana Card or Passport as a form of identification. In the absence of any of the two forms of ID, two registered voters can guarantee for an applicant through the Guarantor System.
- Guarantors can only guarantee for 10 voters. Those who guaranteed 10 voters during the limited exercise cannot guarantee another voter during the mop-up exercise.
- The Mop-Up Registration Exercise will be conducted online, and existing voters are warned not to attempt to register again.
- The Commission has received assurances from MTN that there will be a stable network during the exercise.
- The Commission reiterated that the PROVISIONAL number of voters on the Voters Register is 18,681,366.
